DESCRIPTION: Reflecting on the significance of the Chattanooga River and a social desire to be more connected with nature, Haku embodies the spirit of the Freeform Challenge by elevating our formal strategies at responding to and connecting internal programs to the surrounding elements. The slender nature of the site along with its southern heritage invites a re-imagining of the shotgun house typology. Each room blends into the next along a linear axis accentuated by a sweeping and continuous envelope. The house widens to incorporate courtyards throughout the prototype, blurring the formal boundaries of interior and exterior space planning. While the shell folds, its arms reach out into the site, creating social and private porches while also forming privacy and solar screens.
